MikroTik RouterOS is the operating system that runs on MikroTik routers — Latvian-made networking hardware hugely popular with Indian ISPs and hotels for its price-to-power ratio. RouterOS turns even a ₹4,000 device into a professional router capable of hotspot portals, PPPoE servers, bandwidth shaping, firewalling, VPNs and detailed per-user control that normally costs many times more from Cisco-class vendors.
Local cable operators and WISPs across India build entire businesses on RouterOS: one hEX or CCR router can authenticate thousands of subscribers, enforce each customer's speed plan, and expire accounts automatically on renewal date. Management happens through Winbox, a web interface, or the API — the API being what lets billing panels create users, change packages and disconnect non-payers without anyone touching the router manually.
