What is UPI Payment?

UPI, the Unified Payments Interface, is India's instant bank-to-bank payment system run by NPCI. Money moves directly between bank accounts in seconds, 24x7, using a virtual payment address (like shop@upi), a mobile number or a QR code โ€” no card numbers, no waiting for settlement. Apps like PhonePe, Google Pay and Paytm are simply front-ends to the same UPI rails.

UPI now processes many hundreds of crores of transactions monthly and is the default way Indians pay everyone from vegetable vendors to schools. For businesses, person-to-merchant UPI is essentially free at small scale โ€” a printed QR on the counter costs nothing per transaction โ€” while software integrations add automation: auto-confirming ticket purchases, matching payments to invoices, and reconciling daily collections without checking bank statements line by line.
