What is Bandwidth Management (QoS)?
Bandwidth management, or QoS (Quality of Service), is controlling how a limited internet pipe is shared: setting maximum speeds per user, guaranteeing minimums for important traffic, and prioritising latency-sensitive uses like video calls over bulk downloads. On MikroTik this is done with simple queues or queue trees that shape each customer, department or application to defined limits.
Without QoS, one person torrenting can choke a whole hostel's 100 Mbps line. With it, an Indian ISP selling "20 Mbps plans" enforces exactly 20 Mbps per subscriber, can burst speeds briefly for a snappy feel, and can throttle heavy users after their quota. Offices use the same tools differently โ reserving bandwidth for CCTV uploads and billing software so YouTube in the pantry never disturbs them.
