What is Evidence Encryption?
Evidence encryption is protecting digital evidence files with cryptography so only authorised people can open them. Files are scrambled with an algorithm such as AES-256; without the key, the data is unreadable even if the hard disk or cloud account is stolen. Encryption applies at rest (stored files), in transit (uploads and shares) and via encrypted containers for handovers.
Video evidence is doubly sensitive — it is both legally critical and often private, showing faces and premises. Encryption keeps a stolen laptop or misdelivered pen drive from becoming a leak, and supports compliance with India's DPDP Act, which requires reasonable safeguards for personal data. Standard practice pairs encryption with access logs: every decryption and viewing recorded, feeding the chain-of-custody documentation courts expect.
