What is Geotagging?
Geotagging is embedding location coordinates — latitude and longitude — into a digital file, most commonly a photo. Phones do it automatically when location is on; the coordinates sit invisibly in the photo's EXIF metadata. In local SEO, geotagged photos uploaded to a Google Business Profile or website are believed to reinforce the business's association with its physical area.
Its direct ranking power is debated — Google states it reads image content and context rather than EXIF for ranking — but geotagging remains standard practice among Indian SEO agencies as a low-effort supporting signal, alongside genuinely useful habits like naming files descriptively and uploading real photos regularly. Geotagging also has practical uses beyond SEO: field-service teams geotag site photos as proof of visit, and surveys geotag assets for mapping.
