What is Sitemap XML?
A sitemap.xml is a machine-readable file listing every page of a website you want search engines to know about, usually with each page's last-modified date. It lives at a standard location like yoursite.in/sitemap.xml and is submitted to Google Search Console, telling crawlers "here is everything I have" instead of hoping they discover pages by following links.
Sitemaps matter most for new sites with few backlinks and large sites with deep pages — a glossary of 100 terms or a store with 2,000 products may take Google months to find unaided, versus days with a submitted sitemap. Most platforms generate one automatically. Submitting it also unlocks Search Console's indexing reports, showing which pages Google has actually included and which it skipped and why.
