What is Video Watermarking?

Video watermarking embeds identifying information into video — either visibly, as an on-screen logo, case number or timestamp, or invisibly, as data woven into the pixels that survives copying and re-encoding. Visible watermarks assert ownership and deter misuse; invisible (forensic) watermarks let the source of a leaked copy be traced back to whoever it was issued to.

In evidence handling, watermarking serves accountability: when CCTV footage of an incident must be shared with lawyers, insurers or police, each copy can carry a recipient-specific mark, so if a clip surfaces on social media the leaking party is identifiable. Indian businesses also watermark training videos and paid content against piracy. Watermarks complement, not replace, hashing — the hash proves integrity, the watermark proves origin.
